Our Story
The Blyth Big Band started up in January 2026. We are looking for brass, saxophone, guitar/bass, drum and piano players.
Perhaps you learned to play in school and haven’t played for a few years? Lets dust off those instruments and use those skills you spent so long learning!
Repertoire will be varied in style covering plenty of swing, funk and pop.

Michael Mather – Conductor
Blyth Big Band is directed by Michael Mather.
Academically, Michael received his BMus (Hons) in 2016, followed by his MMus in Creative Practice through the University of Newcastle in 2018 where he specialised in composition, free improvisation and Hindustani Classical Music.
Since then Michael has developed a wealth of experience as a performer, teacher and musical director. He is currently the conductor for the Vermont Big Band.
