TYNE RECORDER CONSORT
A new recorder ensemble for North Shields
Tyne Recorder Consort is a new, friendly recorder ensemble starting in January 2027. We are looking for players of all abilities who would like to make music together, learn new repertoire and enjoy playing as part of a group.
Join us
The ensemble will meet on Tuesday evenings from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at Yamaha Music School on Russell Street, North Shields. Rehearsals will begin on 5th January 2027.
Each session will include a break in the middle for tea, coffee and biscuits, as well as a chance to relax and socialise with the other players. We want the ensemble to be as much about enjoying music and meeting people as it is about rehearsing.
Music for a range of players
The ensemble plans to perform a wide range of music, giving players the opportunity to explore different styles, periods and sounds. Parts will be written and adapted according to ability, so players with a range of experience can take part.
Whether you are an experienced recorder player or are returning to the instrument after some time, you are welcome to join. The aim is to create an ensemble where everyone can contribute, develop their playing and enjoy making music together.
Performances
Once the ensemble is established, we aim to give around three or four concerts each year. These performances will provide an opportunity to share the music we have been working on with friends, family and the wider local community.
Musical direction
The ensemble will be directed by professional recorder player Greg Bealing, who will lead rehearsals, help players develop their ensemble skills and shape the group’s musical programme.
How to join
Signing up is simple. Just complete the short sign-up form below and we will use your details to keep you informed about the ensemble.
Nearer the start date, everyone who has signed up will be added to a WhatsApp group for ensemble communications, including rehearsal information, reminders and other updates.
Cost
January’s rehearsals are completely free, giving everyone the opportunity to come along, meet the group and see if Tyne Recorder Consort is right for them.
After January, membership is paid monthly across the year: £14 per month for adults and £8 per month for juniors.
Greg Bealing – Musical Director
Greg is a genre-spanning multi-instrumentalist, performer and educator, most often found playing recorder and fiddle. Originally from Buckinghamshire, he moved to the North East in 2020 to complete a degree in Folk & Traditional Music before obtaining a MMus specialising in recorder performance from Newcastle University, where he now teaches recorder.
After a relatively late introduction to the instrument as a teenager, Greg became interested in the recorder’s capabilities and usage in different contexts. After becoming the first recorder player in the National Youth Folk Ensemble, he has become one of the leading lights on the instrument within the UK’s folk music scene performing at festivals up and down the country with folk-fusion trio The Hop. Being classically trained, Greg maintains a strong interest in Baroque and contemporary recorder repertoire and spreading high-quality recorder playing and tuition to wider audiences.
